Vincent's rocketship birdhouse |
6:45 am: "Mommy, can I do a mosaic?"
I love the early mornings. So do the kids, apparently, because this
seems to be when their most creative ideas burst out. And while it might
take me a minute to wake up enough to remember just what a mosaic is, I
usually try to say yes.

Catherine's early-morning mosaic |
The still-dark hours have
provided the genesis for plenty of creations around here: rocketship
birdhouses and Hawaii-themed airplanes, paper-plate ladybugs and
Kleenex-box ukeleles, canopies for Barbie beds and makeshift bow and
arrows.

The airplanes for the Trader Joe's contest

Usually Dominic wanders in mid-project hollering
"Me too do it!" and will enthusiastically sit still long enough to wave
markers or paintbrushes or glue bottles around in the air until he
announces, "Me brave knight! Me need sword!" and run off to defend Baby
Monica from the "bad mens."

Making an art quilt from their do-a-dot paintings |
Right now, their homemade airplanes are hanging in Trader Joe's, a source of constant amusement on our grocery outings. Vincent took third place in the News & Observer's Birdhouse Contest, and Catherine keeps our front door "art gallery" updated with all her projects. She also loves to sit the boys down and give them art lessons. Thanks to her, Vincent can draw a pretty good girl riding a horse, complete with cowboy hat, eyelashes and lipstick.
Of course, this doesn't mean I don't welcome the occasional
"Mommy, can I watch TV?" Because turning on the TV, after all, is a
whole lot easier than cleaning up after a mosaic project.
